Landscape Rock in Alberta: Which Type, How Much You Need, and What It Costs

The practical side of a rock landscape — choosing material that holds up to chinooks and wind, calculating quantities properly, and the base prep that decides whether it still looks good in year five.

The decision that matters most here is not which rock you like the look of. It is the base underneath it and the edging around it, because chinook freeze-thaw cycles will move poorly installed rock into your lawn within two seasons.

Choosing rock for a yard looks like an aesthetic decision. Two seasons later, most people discover it was mostly an engineering one.

The rock that sinks into the soil, the fabric that surfaces through the gravel, the border that has migrated three feet into the lawn — none of those are the fault of the rock anyone picked. They are the result of what happened, or did not happen, before the rock went down.

Two Alberta-specific considerations

Wind matters more here than most guides account for. Lethbridge and the surrounding area see some of the strongest sustained winds in the country, and lightweight materials — lava rock in particular — will relocate. So will light mulch. If a bed sits in an exposed corner or along a wind-funnelling side yard, choose heavier material regardless of what looks best in a catalogue.

Angular beats rounded on any slope. Crushed and angular pieces interlock and hold position; rounded river rock rolls. On a coulee-side property or any grade, that difference decides whether the rock stays where it was placed.

How much rock do you actually need?

This is where most orders go wrong in one direction or the other — either a driveway full of surplus, or a second delivery charge for the last twenty square feet.

The calculation

Multiply length by width to get square footage, then divide by the coverage figure for your chosen depth. One cubic yard covers approximately:

Two practical notes. Larger rock needs greater depth to look right and cover properly — 3-inch river rock at a 2-inch depth will show the fabric beneath. And suppliers often sell by weight rather than volume: as a rough conversion, one cubic yard of most landscape rock weighs somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 tons, though this varies by material, so ask your supplier for the conversion on the specific product.

Order about ten percent more than the calculation suggests. Settling, uneven grade and the corners nobody measured all consume material, and a second delivery for half a yard costs more than the surplus would have.

THE MEASUREMENT WORTH DOUBLE-CHECKING Measure the bed as it will be, not as it is. Most rock projects expand during planning — the border creeps outward, a tree ring gets added, the strip along the driveway joins on. Sketch the final shape and measure that, because ordering twice is where budgets break on this kind of project.

The base underneath: what actually determines longevity

Rock laid directly onto soil disappears into it. Not immediately — gradually, over two or three freeze-thaw cycles, until you are looking at a bed that is half gravel and half dirt with weeds coming through it.

Southern Alberta is unusually hard on this. Chinooks bring repeated mid-winter thaw and refreeze rather than one long stable freeze, and every cycle works the rock downward and the soil upward. Add clay soils that swell and shrink with moisture, and a bed without proper preparation has a short life.

What proper preparation involves

1.  Strip the sod and organic material. Rock over grass is rock over a future weed bed — organic matter left underneath decomposes, settles, and feeds whatever grows through.

2.  Excavate to allow for full rock depth plus base, so the finished surface sits level with surrounding grade rather than mounded above it.

3.  Compact the base. A firm, compacted subgrade is what stops the rock from sinking unevenly. This is the step most often skipped and the one that causes the most visible failure.

4.  Address drainage before anything goes down. Water that pools under a rock bed will heave it. If the area holds water after rain, that gets solved first.

5.  Install edging that is anchored into the ground, not simply laid on it. Freeze-thaw lifts unanchored edging out within a season or two.

The landscape fabric question

Worth being honest about, because opinions differ and most articles just say yes.

Landscape fabric under rock does suppress weeds initially and does slow rock from mixing into soil. It also fails eventually. Organic matter accumulates on top of it, weeds root in that layer rather than beneath, and by year five you often have weeds growing through fabric that is now a nuisance to remove. Punctured, surfacing fabric edges are one of the most common complaints about older rock beds.

Where fabric earns its place is beneath rock over a compacted base in low-organic areas — pathways, driveway edges, and beds away from trees. Where it causes trouble is under trees and shrubs that drop leaves, in beds you plan to plant into later, and anywhere the alternative of proper depth and edging would work as well.

The more durable approach for most beds is adequate depth — three to four inches — over a properly compacted base, with firm edging, and a plan for occasional weeding rather than the expectation of never weeding. Whichever route you choose, choose it deliberately rather than by default.

For a 500 square foot bed, that puts a properly installed rock landscape somewhere between roughly $4,500 and $9,000 depending on material, access and how much drainage or grading work the site needs. Access is the variable people underestimate most — a bed reachable by a machine costs meaningfully less than one where every yard is wheelbarrowed through a narrow gate.

Five mistakes that show up by year three

  • No edging, or edging laid on the surface — without an anchored border, freeze-thaw and mowing push rock steadily into the lawn. Then it goes through a mower blade.
  • Rock too shallow — two inches looks thin, shows fabric, and lets weeds through. Three to four is the working range.
  • Skipping base prep — rock laid on grass or topsoil sinks and grows weeds. There is no product that fixes a base that was never prepared.
  • Light material in a wind-exposed spot — lava rock and pea gravel in an exposed Lethbridge yard will not stay put.
  • Ignoring where water goes — a rock bed that channels water toward a foundation or a low spot creates a much more expensive problem than the bed cost.

Keeping it looking new

Rock landscapes are genuinely low maintenance, not no maintenance. Realistically:

  • Spot-weed twice a year — pull what appears before it seeds. Twenty minutes twice a season beats a weekend in year four.
  • Blow or rake out organic debris each fall — leaves and debris left to break down become the soil layer weeds germinate in. A leaf blower on a low setting does it, though not with lava rock.
  • Top up every three to five years — a light top-up every few years restores depth lost to settling.
  • Rinse decorative rock occasionally — river rock and washed rock clean up noticeably with a rinse after a dusty season.
